Centre Sanctions ₹290 Crore Road Projects for Aska
The Central government has approved infrastructure projects worth around ₹290 crore for Aska in Odisha’s Ganjam district. The development plan includes a new bypass, multiple bridges, and supporting road infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic congestion in the region. The initiative is expected to significantly upgrade transport efficiency between key towns while also addressing long-standing civic challenges.
₹159.5 Crore Bypass to Decongest Aska Town
A major component of the project is a ₹159.5 crore bypass that will connect NH-157 and NH-59. The 6.72-km stretch will be developed as a two-lane road and will include two flyovers and one underpass. The bypass is designed to divert heavy traffic away from Aska town, reducing congestion and improving road safety for local commuters.
Out of the total cost, ₹37.43 crore has been allocated for land acquisition, highlighting the scale of the infrastructure expansion. The bypass is expected to streamline traffic movement and reduce travel delays on key routes passing through the region.
Bridges Under Setu Bandhan Scheme to Strengthen Connectivity
The Centre has also approved the construction of high-level bridges over the Rushikulya and Badanadi rivers, along with another bridge over Tipisara nullah. These projects are being developed under the Setu Bandhan scheme, which focuses on improving bridge connectivity across India.
The bridges will connect NH-157 and NH-59, strengthening regional transport corridors and ensuring smoother movement of goods and passengers. Funding will be provided through the Central Road Infrastructure Fund for 2025–26, ensuring structured execution and timely implementation.
State Clears DPR and Plans Four-Lane Green Road
The Odisha state works department has already granted administrative approval for the bridge projects, while the Centre has sanctioned ₹66.35 lakh for feasibility studies and detailed project reports. A proposed 33-km four-lane green road between Berhampur and Aska is also under planning, with final costs to be determined after the DPR is completed.
Local Development and Economic Impact Expected
Local representatives have welcomed the announcement, stating that the projects will ease traffic congestion and help manage flooding issues in the region. The improved connectivity between Berhampur and Aska is also expected to boost trade and reduce travel time significantly, supporting overall economic development in Ganjam district.
