NHAI Sanctions ₹825 Crore For Kiratpur–Manali Highway Repair
The National Highways Authority of India has approved ₹825 crore for major repair and stabilisation work on the Kiratpur–Manali highway. The decision comes after repeated damage caused by floods, landslides, and riverbank erosion, especially during monsoon seasons. To address these issues, a consultant has been appointed to conduct detailed geological studies and recommend long-term safety measures.
NHAI Kiratpur Manali Highway Identifies 44 Risk Zones
A detailed survey has identified 44 high-risk locations between Pandoh and Manali that require urgent intervention. These include one site in Thalout, nine in Jhalogi, and 34 vulnerable points in the Kullu–Manali stretch.
The project work has been divided among five companies to ensure faster execution. The focus areas include slope stabilisation, construction of retaining walls, strengthening weak road sections, and realignment of damaged stretches to improve long-term durability.
NHAI Kiratpur Manali Highway Focus On Landslide Control
The consultant has highlighted major landslide-prone areas such as Jhalogi, Thalout, Nagarni, and Jalanal. These zones frequently experience slope failure and falling debris, especially during heavy rainfall.
To control these risks, the project includes installation of protective structures and slope reinforcement measures. River-cut zones where erosion has weakened the road foundation are also being prioritised for structural strengthening.
NHAI Kiratpur Manali Highway Flood Protection Measures
A key part of the NHAI Kiratpur Manali highway project is the construction of check dams on tributaries of the Beas River. These structures will help control debris flow, reduce silt movement, and minimise damage from flash floods.
The Kullu–Manali section, which was severely affected by Beas floods in 2023 and 2025, is a major focus area. Critical structures like the Jhalogi tunnel and Dwara flyover near Aut, both damaged by landslides, are also included for urgent repair.
Conclusion
The ₹825 crore NHAI Kiratpur Manali highway project aims to ensure safer and all-weather connectivity between Manali and Leh. With targeted slope stabilisation, flood control systems, and structural repairs, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce disruptions caused by landslides and extreme weather in the region.
