Milence Opens Kassel Charging Hub For Electric Trucks
Milence, the European truck charging joint venture formed by Daimler Truck, Traton, and Volvo Group, has opened a new electric truck charging park near Kassel-Lohfelden in Germany. The facility marks the company’s ninth charging location in the country and is positioned along the A7 and A49 motorway corridor, integrated into the SVG Autohof Lohfeldener Rüssel site.
The new hub is designed to support long-haul electric freight transport and has already been tested as part of a major cross-border demonstration drive from Paris to Berlin.
Milence Kassel Charging Hub Supports EV Truck Corridor
The Kassel-Lohfelden charging park features four charging bays equipped with 400 kW CCS fast chargers designed for heavy-duty electric trucks operating on European long-haul routes. The site also includes driver facilities and benefits from proximity to an existing fuel station, making it suitable for mixed fleet operations during the transition phase.
Milence Kassel Hub Introduces Battery Storage System
A key highlight of the Kassel site is the integration of a stationary battery storage system, the first of its kind within the Milence network. This system helps stabilise energy supply and allows charging operations even in areas with limited grid connectivity, supporting faster infrastructure rollout across Europe.
Paris To Berlin EV Truck Test Route Demonstration
The opening of the Kassel hub was part of the “Power to Go Further” roadshow, where electric trucks from Daimler Truck, MAN, Volvo Trucks, and Renault Trucks completed a 1,000-kilometre journey from Paris to Berlin. The convoy relied exclusively on Milence charging stations across multiple countries, proving the practicality of long-distance electric freight operations.
Key Highlights of the EV Truck Roadshow
- 1,000 km Paris to Berlin electric truck journey completed successfully
- Trucks from four major manufacturers participated in the convoy
- Charging stops included France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany
- Demonstration showed feasibility of long-haul EV freight corridors
- Focus on cost efficiency and reduced emissions in logistics transport
Milence Expands European EV Truck Charging Network
Milence currently operates 34 charging hubs across eight European countries with 221 charging points supporting major logistics corridors like Paris–Amsterdam and Antwerp–Stockholm. The network mainly uses 400 kW CCS chargers, with megawatt charging systems being introduced in select locations.
The company plans to scale up to 50 charging parks across 10 European markets by the end of 2026, including 18 sites in Germany. By 2028, it aims to reach 90 charging parks and 284 megawatt charging points across 71 locations.
EV Truck Cost Efficiency And Future Outlook
Milence estimates electric truck operating costs at around €0.995 per kilometre compared to €1.003 for diesel under specific conditions. The company also reports potential CO₂ savings of up to 1,470 kg per truck when renewable energy is used. However, slow grid approvals and regulatory delays, especially in Germany, remain a challenge for faster expansion.
Conclusion
The Kassel-Lohfelden charging hub marks a major milestone in Europe’s electric freight transition. Combined with the Paris–Berlin corridor test, Milence has demonstrated that long-distance electric trucking is both operationally viable and increasingly cost competitive. With rapid expansion plans underway, the network is set to play a key role in building a zero-emission logistics future across Europe.
