Uttar Pradesh Launches Women-Led E-Rickshaw Scheme to Boost Safety and Employment

The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has launched a women-led e-rickshaw scheme under the Safe Mobility Program. This initiative aims to improve women’s safety while creating rural employment opportunities. It empowers women from self-help groups as drivers and entrepreneurs, ensuring safer and more accessible transport for women and girls across the state.

Women-Centric Mobility and Rural Employment

The program focuses on enhancing mobility with dignity and providing sustainable livelihoods. In the first phase, 1,000 e-rickshaws are being distributed to women associated with self-help groups (SHGs). The initiative provides comprehensive support including vehicle provision, skill training, financial assistance, and help in obtaining driving licenses.

Key aspects of the initiative include:

  • Distribution of 1,000 e-rickshaws in the initial phase
  • Skill training for women on driving and vehicle operations
  • Financial literacy and support for entrepreneurship
  • Assistance in obtaining driving licenses
  • Expansion planned to additional districts for wider coverage

The scheme has already been rolled out in Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kaushambi, and Jhansi. The next phase will extend services to Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Sonbhadra, Deoria, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Sitapur.

Officials emphasize that the phased rollout ensures smooth implementation, proper monitoring, and adequate training infrastructure in every district.

Enhancing Safety and Building Trust

A core objective of the Safe Mobility Program is to create a safer commuting environment for women, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where transport options are limited. By introducing women-driven e-rickshaws, the initiative aims to:

  • Increase trust among female passengers
  • Encourage more girls to continue education
  • Support women in joining the workforce confidently
  • Boost female participation in traditionally male-dominated transport sectors

Early Results and Economic Impact

Pilot districts have already shown positive outcomes:

  • 119 women have received e-rickshaws and become micro-entrepreneurs
  • 629 women have completed training to operate vehicles
  • 244 women have obtained driving licenses
  • Participants earn an average annual income exceeding Rs 3 lakh
  • Women are gaining skills in vehicle maintenance, daily operations, and financial management

The program not only provides income but also strengthens the role of women in local communities, empowering them to contribute to household earnings and decision-making.

Environmental and Social Benefits

The women-led e-rickshaw initiative also aligns with environmental sustainability and social transformation:

  • E-rickshaws reduce carbon emissions and noise pollution
  • Promotes green and sustainable mobility solutions across UP
  • Strengthens grassroots institutions and self-help groups
  • Reduces rural migration by creating local employment opportunities
  • Enhances community visibility and participation of women in public spaces

Officials highlight that this initiative is more than a transport solution; it is a broader social intervention aimed at reshaping public spaces and encouraging women’s economic independence.
