Industry Consortium LEAF Launched To Advance EV Charging Ecosystem

A new industry consortium, the Light Electric-Vehicle Acceleration Forum (LEAF), has been launched to strengthen India’s electric mobility ecosystem by developing a more integrated and interoperable charging network for electric two- and three-wheelers.

LEAF Inauguration And Member Composition

The forum was inaugurated by H. D. Kumaraswamy and brings together key stakeholders from across the light electric vehicle (LEV) industry, including vehicle manufacturers, charging infrastructure operators, component suppliers, and technology providers. LEAF was established through a memorandum of understanding between Hero MotoCorp, Ather Energy, and IPEC India, with the founding members forming the initial steering committee.

At launch, LEAF included over 20 member organisations spanning OEMs, charge point operators, suppliers, and software providers, with plans to expand membership in the coming months.

Objectives And Initiatives

LEAF aims to work with government agencies, regulators, and industry associations to facilitate the development of EV charging infrastructure in line with policy directives. Key focus areas include improving interoperability across charging networks, enhancing reliability, and ensuring a consistent user experience for EV riders.

One of the initiatives referenced is the Light Electric Combined Charging System (LECCS), approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The standard (IS 17017 Part 2/Sec 7) defines a combined AC/DC “Type 7” connector, supporting both slow and fast charging for light electric vehicles while enabling communication and network interoperability.

Supporting India’s EV Adoption

By addressing challenges related to fragmented charging networks, LEAF is positioned as an industry-led effort to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in India. The consortium’s collaborative approach seeks to create a seamless and reliable charging experience for EV users, supporting the country’s transition to cleaner transportation.

Conclusion

The launch of the LEAF consortium marks a critical step in advancing India’s electric mobility ecosystem. Through collaboration among OEMs, infrastructure providers, and technology partners, the forum is set to enhance charging network interoperability and reliability, paving the way for wider adoption of electric two- and three-wheelers.
