SUN Mobility Receives India’s First AIS-038 Certification
SUN Mobility, a leading provider of battery swapping solutions, has earned India’s first AIS-038 certification for its indigenously developed swappable high-voltage battery platform for heavy commercial vehicles. The certification was awarded by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Chakan, following extensive testing to confirm the system’s safety, reliability, and performance for trucks and buses.
Platform Specifications and Design
The certified battery platform is available in 50 kWh and 100 kWh variants, with combinations possible, all operating within the 660V high-voltage category. Its OEM-agnostic, modular architecture enables compatibility across multiple vehicle manufacturers and supports both new vehicle integration and retrofits.
This flexibility allows fleet operators to scale energy capacity according to operational requirements for small, medium, and heavy commercial vehicles. The modular design aims to reduce vehicle downtime, ease range anxiety, and improve fleet economics — critical factors for the wider adoption of electric commercial vehicles.
Supporting Electric Mobility Growth in India
The certification comes at a time when the Indian government is actively promoting electric mobility, including initiatives such as the PM e-DRIVE scheme for electric bus and truck procurement. SUN Mobility’s AIS-038 certification establishes the platform as a verified, compliant option for fleet operators and OEMs seeking to align with these policy objectives.
Ashok Agarwal, CEO of SUN Mobility’s HEV business, described the certification as a reaffirmation of the company’s commitment to expanding EV adoption through domestically manufactured battery swapping solutions.
Naveen Chopra, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Manufacturing Operations, added that the development and certification validate the platform’s engineering robustness and readiness for real-world commercial use.
Company Achievements
Founded in 2017, SUN Mobility has deployed over 1,300 Swap Points across 23+ cities in India. The company has facilitated more than 35 million battery swaps, covering over one billion electric kilometres and contributing to the reduction of more than 70,000 metric tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
SUN Mobility also operates a joint venture with Indian Oil Corporation Limited, called IndoFast Swap Energy, aimed at expanding India’s battery swapping network to support the growing EV ecosystem.
