GAIL (India) Invests in TruAlt Bioenergy Subsidiary for CBG Expansion

GAIL India Limited has announced a ₹13 crore investment in Leafiniti Bioenergy Private Limited, a subsidiary of TruAlt Bioenergy Limited, to expand compressed biogas production capacity in India. The investment is aimed at accelerating clean fuel development and strengthening the country’s renewable energy infrastructure through structured project execution.

The funding is part of a share subscription-cum-shareholders’ agreement signed in August 2025. Under this arrangement, GAIL will hold a 49 percent stake in Leafiniti Bioenergy, while TruAlt Bioenergy retains a majority 51 percent stake. The capital will be deployed in phases based on project approvals and governance mechanisms.

Expansion of Compressed Biogas Projects

The partnership will focus on developing multiple compressed biogas plants across Karnataka, Maharashtra and Odisha. In the first phase, six greenfield facilities will be established, each with a production capacity of 12 tonnes per day.

These plants will primarily use agricultural residues sourced from sugar mills, converting farm waste into renewable energy. The combined annual production capacity from this phase is estimated at 23,976 tonnes of compressed biogas.

Along with clean fuel output, the projects will generate by-products such as 97,902 tonnes of fermented organic manure and 470,862 tonnes of liquid fermented organic manure annually. These outputs are expected to support soil health and promote circular agricultural practices.

Energy Transition and Environmental Impact

The collaboration between GAIL India and TruAlt Bioenergy is aligned with India’s broader clean energy transition goals. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels while expanding domestic production of renewable gas.

The first phase of the project is projected to displace around 19,800 tonnes of fossil fuels annually and reduce methane emissions by approximately 9,300 tonnes per year. This is expected to contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved environmental sustainability outcomes.

In addition to environmental benefits, the project is estimated to generate between 820 and 1,225 direct and indirect jobs. This will support rural employment and strengthen value chains linked to agriculture, energy production and waste management.

Strategic Role in India’s Clean Energy Growth

The partnership highlights a growing focus on integrating renewable fuel production with national energy infrastructure. By combining TruAlt Bioenergy’s production capabilities with GAIL India’s distribution network, the initiative aims to scale compressed biogas adoption across multiple regions.

The project also supports government efforts to promote compressed biogas as an alternative to conventional natural gas, contributing to India’s long-term transition toward a cleaner and more sustainable energy ecosystem.
