Ranital–Amb–Una–Mehatpur Highway Project Assigned to NHAI

The Central Government has formally issued a notification placing the Ranital–Amb–Una–Mehatpur highway project under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). This move is set to accelerate infrastructure development in Himachal Pradesh by bringing the highway under the national highways framework. The project will now be executed according to NHAI’s engineering standards, ensuring faster construction and structural strengthening.

Existing Kangra–Ranital Stretch Already Four-Laned

The Kangra–Ranital section has already been expanded into a four-lane road. This upgrade has significantly improved traffic flow, reduced congestion, and enhanced safety for commuters in the area. Once the Ranital–Amb–Una–Mehatpur stretch is widened to four lanes, it will form a continuous high-speed corridor connecting Kangra district with Una and other neighbouring regions.

The upgraded highway will improve access to major cities such as Chandigarh and Delhi and strengthen connectivity with Punjab and Haryana. This enhanced corridor will serve as a critical link for both passenger travel and freight movement across northern India.

Corridor Widening Now Under NHAI

With the Central Government notification, key stretches of this highway corridor have been placed under NHAI’s jurisdiction. Previously, some segments were managed by the state Public Works Department. NHAI’s involvement is expected to speed up pending road improvement works while adhering to higher construction and maintenance standards.

The authority will carry out four-laning and full structural strengthening of the highway. Centralized planning and execution under NHAI are likely to ensure that construction progress is systematic and aligned with national highway guidelines. This will benefit commuters, logistics operators, and regional businesses alike.

Reduced Travel Time Between Palampur and Chandigarh

Amb serves as a vital gateway linking Himachal Pradesh with the plains. Once the Ranital–Amb–Una section is fully four-laned, the travel time between Palampur and Chandigarh is expected to reduce sharply. At present, the journey takes nearly six hours, but post-upgrade, commuters may be able to reach Chandigarh in approximately three and a half hours.

The improved highway will also enhance driving conditions, reduce accident risks, and ease congestion in towns along the route, including Una, Mehatpur, and Amb. Faster travel times are expected to boost regional mobility and improve connectivity for residents and tourists alike.

Tourism Boost in Kangra Valley

Better highway connectivity is expected to benefit the tourism sector in the Kangra Valley. Known for its scenic landscapes, cultural heritage, and adventure tourism, destinations such as Dharamshala, McLeodganj, Palampur, and Bir Billing are likely to attract more visitors from metropolitan areas.

Improved access could encourage year-round tourism, supporting growth in hospitality, transportation, and allied industries. The upgraded corridor will make travel easier for both domestic and international tourists, contributing to local employment and business opportunities.

Strengthened Trade and Market Access

The highway project is also expected to improve regional trade and commerce. Agricultural produce, Kangra tea, handicrafts, and goods produced by small industries will benefit from faster access to markets across northern India. Reduced transport costs, smoother logistics, and stronger supply chains may attract new investment to the region.

The upgraded corridor will likely create additional business opportunities, boosting economic activity and encouraging the growth of small and medium enterprises in Himachal Pradesh.

Expectations Rise in Kangra and Una

With NHAI now overseeing the project, residents of Kangra and Una anticipate rapid progress in the development of the highway corridor. The four-laning project is expected to strengthen regional infrastructure, enhance economic growth, and improve connectivity for both commuters and businesses.

The move signals a major step forward in Himachal Pradesh’s infrastructure development, promising faster, safer, and more efficient travel while supporting tourism, trade, and overall regional prosperity.
