Chennai Single Mother Builds Career as Amazon Truck Driver

A 34 year old single mother from Chennai has carved out a successful career in commercial trucking, moving from being a driving school trainer to becoming a truck driver supporting Amazon’s operations network. Bhuvaneshwari’s journey reflects how persistence and skill can open doors in an industry where women are still underrepresented.

Her professional journey includes a range of roles such as stage singer, ambulance driver and driving instructor. Each experience strengthened her driving skills and confidence, eventually leading her to commercial trucking, which offered the financial stability she had been searching for.

Early interest in driving shaped her career

Bhuvaneshwari’s interest in driving began in childhood while watching her father and uncle operate commercial vehicles. Their work on the road sparked a quiet fascination with the discipline and independence that came with driving.

As she grew older, that early curiosity developed into a profession. She began exploring different roles related to driving, which gradually built her technical abilities and familiarity with vehicles.

Over the years, she worked in several positions including driving instructor and ambulance driver. These experiences helped her gain valuable on road exposure and practical knowledge.

Transition to commercial trucking after the pandemic

Bhuvaneshwari started her trucking journey with an 8 foot truck and gradually progressed to larger vehicles through consistent performance and experience. However, the COVID 19 pandemic disrupted her income and created financial uncertainty.

During this period, she began looking for opportunities that could provide more reliable earnings and long term stability. In 2022, a former driving student informed her about a job opportunity within Amazon India’s operations network in Chennai.

She decided to pursue the opportunity and joined as a commercial truck driver. Since then, she has advanced to operating 20 foot trucks across intracity routes.

Role in Amazon’s middle mile operations

As part of Amazon’s operations network, Bhuvaneshwari now transports customer orders between fulfilment centres and delivery stations across the city. This process forms an important part of the company’s middle mile logistics network.

Working with Amazon’s trucking partners has provided her with consistent work opportunities and a steady source of income after years of financial uncertainty.

Balancing work and family responsibilities

Beyond her professional journey, Bhuvaneshwari also manages significant family responsibilities. As a single mother raising her young son and supporting her mother, maintaining financial stability is essential.

The steady earnings from her trucking job have allowed her to manage household expenses and plan ahead for her son’s education and future.

She says driving has always interested her, but choosing it as a full time profession transformed her life. Having reliable work has given her confidence and the ability to support her family independently.

Encouraging more women to enter the field

Commercial trucking and logistics remain industries where women have limited representation in India. Bhuvaneshwari believes more women should consider driving as a viable profession.

She says she enjoys being on the road and wants to continue growing in her career while encouraging other women to explore opportunities in driving.

A story of resilience and opportunity

Bhuvaneshwari’s journey from driving instructor to Amazon truck driver highlights the impact of stable employment and access to opportunities. Her story reflects determination, adaptability and the drive to build a better future for her family.

While her journey is inspiring, it also points to the broader potential for women in commercial driving when they are given access to consistent opportunities and support.
