Jaipur Completes E-Bus Trials, 50 Buses Ready For Rollout

Jaipur is all set to welcome air-conditioned electric buses on city roads by mid-April 2026, following successful trial runs by the Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL). The initiative marks a significant step in the city’s transition to cleaner, sustainable public transport.

Successful Trials and Initial Fleet

JCTSL conducted a three-day trial across key city routes, testing both 9-metre and 12-metre AC electric buses. According to Managing Director Narayan Singh, the trials evaluated battery performance, charging efficiency, navigation in dense traffic, passenger comfort, and ride stability.

The trial results were positive, while the final technical report from bus manufacturers is awaited by the Union government. Jaipur will receive its first 150 buses under the Pradhan Mantri e‑Bus Sewa Scheme, with 40–50 buses expected to hit the streets by mid-April 2026. Remaining buses will be deployed within the next three months.

PM e-Bus Programme and Procurement

The buses are being procured through Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a subsidiary under the Union Ministry of Power. The project was initially announced in the 2023 Rajasthan State Budget under former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, but rollout was delayed due to funding constraints.

Each bus is equipped with GPS tracking, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, automatic doors, and accessibility features for differently-abled passengers, ensuring both safety and convenience.

Depot Readiness and Infrastructure Upgrades

JCTSL has upgraded the Todi Mod Depot in Vidhyadhar Nagar and Bagrana Depot on Agra Road to support charging and maintenance of electric buses. This infrastructure ensures smooth operations and timely service for commuters.

In addition, the city plans to expand bus stops from 193 to 293 and rationalize routes as part of Jaipur’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan, aiming to improve connectivity and commuter experience.

Phased Fleet Expansion

By June 2026, Jaipur is expected to operate over 300 electric buses in a phased deployment, gradually replacing ageing diesel buses. The expansion will not only reduce emissions but also enhance overall commuter comfort across the growing urban transport network.

This move positions Jaipur as one of India’s leading cities in adopting sustainable electric mobility and modern public transport infrastructure.
