Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway to Transform Travel
The Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway, also known as National Expressway 5 (NE5), is slated for completion by March 2027, according to NHAI officials. Construction, which began in April 2021, faced delays last year due to Operation Sindoor and heavy rains that affected northern states.
Once operational, the expressway will cut the Delhi–Katra distance from 727 kilometers to 588 kilometers, reducing travel time from 14 hours to just six hours. This project is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity, benefiting both commuters and pilgrims.
Pilgrimage Corridor and Strategic Importance
Faster Access for Pilgrims
The expressway connects two major religious sites: Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar and the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. Currently, pilgrims rely on rail or air travel, but the new route will offer a faster and safer alternative, making the journey more convenient.
Defence and Strategic Mobility
Running close to sensitive border areas in Jammu and Kashmir, NE5 will also enhance strategic mobility. The expressway is expected to facilitate quicker deployment and improved movement of defence forces while ensuring connectivity in border regions.
Construction Progress and Technology
Overcoming Challenges
Project director Rajiv Kumar said last year’s hurdles included retaining workers during security concerns and repairing bridges damaged by heavy rains. Despite these setbacks, construction work has resumed at pace and remains on schedule for March 2027.
Advanced Construction Methods
The project uses advanced segmental bridge construction technology, similar to Delhi Metro and Dwarka Expressway projects. The Jammu–Samba stretch includes an elevated corridor of nearly 21.5 kilometers, allowing work to continue without disrupting traffic. NHAI aims to complete about 30 kilometers of the Jammu–Kathua section before the annual Amarnath Yatra.
Key Highlights:
- NE5 will cut Delhi–Katra travel time to six hours
- Connects Amritsar and Katra pilgrimage sites
- Enhances regional and strategic mobility
- Uses advanced bridge construction for minimal traffic disruption
- Completion expected by March 2027
The Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Expressway will redefine travel in northern India, offering faster, safer, and more efficient access for pilgrims, residents, and defence operations.
