Hyundai Staria Camper concept could disrupt van market

Hyundai may be preparing to shake up the global camper van market with the unveiling of its Staria Camper Concept, a fully electric vision aimed squarely at Volkswagen’s iconic Transporter California. Revealed at the Caravan, Motor und Touristik exposition in Stuttgart, Germany, the concept signals Hyundai’s serious intent to enter the fast-growing “van life” and glamping segment.

At first glance, the Staria Camper Concept resembles the standard Hyundai Staria, the MPV introduced in 2021 as a successor to the Starex for Asian and select European markets. However, a closer look reveals that this concept is far more than a people mover. Hyundai has transformed the Staria into a purpose-built electric camper van designed for outdoor-focused travel and extended road trips.

The most significant difference lies under the skin. The Staria Camper Concept features Hyundai’s electric powertrain, marking the brand’s first camper-focused EV proposal. The automaker is preparing a Staria Electric model based on its advanced 800-volt architecture, the same technology that underpins the Ioniq lineup. This setup allows ultra-fast charging, with the battery capable of charging from 10 percent to 80 percent in under 20 minutes when connected to a compatible DC fast charger.

For off-grid situations, Hyundai has added a photovoltaic solar panel integrated into the roof. This panel can power onboard camper amenities and recharge the auxiliary batteries, reducing dependence on charging stations during outdoor stays. Hyundai claims the electric camper delivers around 215 horsepower and offers a driving range of up to 250 miles on a single charge, based on WLTP testing standards.

Beyond its electric credentials, the Staria Camper Concept includes a host of features designed for comfortable outdoor living. Like the Volkswagen California, it comes equipped with an integrated pop-up roof tent that expands sleeping space while keeping the footprint compact. An extended side awning creates a shaded outdoor area, ideal for camping setups. Inside, the camper includes an onboard potable water system, dedicated utility ports, and smart storage solutions tailored for travel and leisure use.

The overall design blends Hyundai’s futuristic styling with practical camper van elements. Large windows improve visibility and natural light, while the robust body structure supports long-distance travel and varied terrain use. The concept highlights Hyundai’s ability to merge EV technology with lifestyle-focused design.

While Hyundai has not yet confirmed production timelines, the Staria Camper Concept suggests the brand is seriously evaluating a production-ready electric camper van. If launched, it could provide a compelling alternative to established players like Volkswagen, especially for buyers seeking a modern, electric take on the camper van experience.

With growing interest in electric mobility and outdoor travel, Hyundai’s latest concept positions the company as a potential disruptor in the camper van space.
