NHAI Removes KYV for New FASTag Issuance

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a significant change in the FASTag issuance process for private vehicles. Starting February 1, 2026, the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification will no longer be required for new FASTag issuance. This move aims to simplify digital toll compliance and enhance convenience for vehicle owners across the country.

The new regulation specifically targets non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans, which form a large portion of FASTag users in India. Under the revised framework, KYV checks will not be required after FASTag activation, shifting the responsibility for vehicle verification entirely to the issuing banks at the time of issuance.

Banks are now tasked with ensuring the authenticity of vehicle details before activating the FASTag. Primary verification will be done using the VAHAN national vehicle database. In cases where VAHAN lacks information on a vehicle, banks must validate details using the Registration Certificate (RC) before activation. This change addresses longstanding operational challenges linked to KYV compliance, including delays, duplicate verification processes, and inconvenience to vehicle owners despite possessing valid documentation.

The NHAI clarified that this relaxation will not apply to FASTags already active. Existing users will continue without KYV unless specific issues arise, such as incorrect issuance, suspected misuse, loose or damaged FASTags, or complaints from toll operators or enforcement authorities. In such scenarios, KYV checks may still be conducted on a case-by-case basis.

Additionally, NHAI has directed banks to strictly follow verification protocols during issuance to prevent errors in vehicle classification, duplicate FASTags, or incorrect vehicle linkage. The authority believes that this streamlined approach will reduce post-activation interventions and strengthen user confidence in the FASTag system.

This decision forms part of broader efforts by NHAI to improve digital tolling efficiency, reduce bottlenecks for highway users, and enhance accountability among issuing entities. FASTag, which has become a central element of India’s electronic toll collection system, is expected to see improved adoption and smoother operations with these procedural simplifications.

With KYV removal for new FASTag issuance, private vehicle owners can expect a faster and more hassle-free experience, while issuing banks remain responsible for ensuring compliance and accurate verification. The NHAI’s initiative reflects a commitment to modernizing highway mobility and supporting seamless digital toll collection across India.
