Vertis Launches India’s First Truck Mounted Attenuator
Vertis Infrastructure has marked a significant milestone in India’s road safety journey with the launch of the country’s first Truck-Mounted Attenuator (TMA), a technology aimed at protecting highway workers and motorists in active construction and maintenance zones. The launch event took place at the Ador Campus in Pune and was attended by officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), industry stakeholders and road safety experts.
Truck-Mounted Attenuators are widely used across the United States and Europe, where they serve as a critical safety layer in high-risk work zones. With their formal introduction in India, the technology is expected to bring global safety practices to the nation’s rapidly expanding highway network.
Highway construction zones are among the most dangerous environments on Indian roads, largely due to high vehicle speeds, close interaction between live traffic and workers, and the absence of adequate physical barriers. The TMA system is designed to directly address these challenges. Mounted on service vehicles operating in high-traffic areas, it acts as a mobile crash cushion that absorbs impact energy during rear-end collisions.
In the event of a crash, the Truck-Mounted Attenuator decelerates the striking vehicle in a controlled manner, significantly reducing the severity of injuries and the risk of fatalities. According to industry data, similar systems introduced on Indian roads in 2021 have already been credited with preventing more than 100 fatalities, underlining their effectiveness in real-world conditions.
Speaking at the launch, Ankit Yadav from NHAI reiterated the authority’s commitment to developing zero-fatality corridors across national highways. He stressed that advanced safety solutions such as TMAs are essential to improving work-zone safety standards and protecting personnel involved in infrastructure development.
From Vertis Infrastructure, Joint Chief Executive Officer Zafar highlighted that the project was developed with a clear focus on safeguarding workers operating in hazardous highway environments. He outlined the technical development and planning that went into adapting the technology for Indian traffic conditions while maintaining international safety benchmarks.
As part of the initial rollout, Vertis Infrastructure confirmed that 20 Truck-Mounted Attenuator units are ready for deployment. Eight units were formally inaugurated during the launch event, while the remaining 12 units are scheduled to be delivered within the next 10 days. The event also featured a live operational demonstration of the TMA system, along with technical briefings on deployment protocols and discussions on scaling the technology across other national highway projects.
The introduction of India’s first Truck-Mounted Attenuator reflects a broader push to integrate proven global safety measures into the country’s infrastructure ecosystem. As highway construction activity continues to accelerate, such technologies are expected to play a key role in reducing accidents and improving overall road safety outcomes.
