Volvo Unveils BZR Electric Coach Chassis with 720 kWh Battery
Volvo Buses has taken a bold step toward sustainable long-distance travel by introducing the new BZR Electric coach chassis, a high-capacity platform that redefines what electric coaches can achieve.
Industry-Leading Battery and Extended Range
At the core of the new BZR Electric coach chassis is an industry-first battery capacity of up to 720 kWh, enabling a range of up to 700 km under the SORT 3 test cycle. This breakthrough extends electric travel to interregional and tour routes—segments traditionally considered out of reach for battery-powered buses.
The platform is an upgraded version of Volvo’s global BZR Electric, first launched in March 2024 with the Volvo 8900 Electric Intercity Bus, which carried a 540 kWh battery pack. With this latest development, Volvo has strengthened its position in the long-distance electric coach market.
Modular Configurations for Versatility
The new chassis comes in both two- and three-axle configurations, accommodating four to eight modular energy storage units. This allows operators to optimize setups for maximum range, payload balance, or efficiency, depending on the operational demands. Whether used for urban routes, intercity transport, or charter journeys, the chassis provides unmatched flexibility.
Comfort, Safety, and Sustainability
Volvo stresses that the BZR Electric is not just about range—it’s designed for passenger comfort, safety, and environmental compliance. With zero tailpipe emissions, it allows operators to access low-emission and environmental zones in cities, aligning with global sustainability targets.
The chassis also integrates active safety systems, including the latest pedestrian and passenger protection features. Passengers benefit from a smoother, quieter ride, while operators gain from reduced noise pollution and lower operating costs.
Fast-Charging Capabilities
To ensure high uptime, the BZR Electric coach chassis supports CCS charging at 250 kW and OppCharge fast-charging at 450 kW. These options reduce downtime, making the chassis suitable for intensive operations where efficiency is critical.
Volvo’s Vision for the Future
Anna Westerberg, President of Volvo Buses, highlighted the importance of this launch:
“Our new electric chassis enables new routes and greater versatility. It minimizes the life-cycle footprint while delivering comfort, efficiency, and safety for long-distance journeys.”
With the introduction of the BZR Electric coach chassis, Volvo Buses is pushing the boundaries of sustainable transport, bridging the gap between urban e-mobility and long-distance travel.
