Montra Electric Launches EV Truck Plant in Manesar, Introduces India’s First All-Women Battery Unit
Montra Electric, the clean mobility arm of the Murugappa Group, has inaugurated its advanced electric heavy commercial vehicle (eHCV) manufacturing facility in Manesar. The plant is expected to boost India’s sustainable freight ecosystem and strengthen the company’s presence in the fast-growing EV commercial vehicle market.
A Milestone in Inclusivity
The Manesar facility introduces India’s first all-women, fully automated battery assembly line, reinforcing Montra Electric’s focus on gender inclusion and empowerment within the EV sector.
High-Tech & Scalable Operations
Built across 255,000 sq. ft. with 150,000 sq. ft. of constructed area, the unit has an annual capacity of 6,000 trucks, expandable to 7,500 units with additional shifts. The plant supports multiple EV models, including the Rhino series, with 60% robotics integration and Industry 4.0 digital practices. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) are deployed across conveyor systems to streamline operations.
The facility is equipped with an in-house battery assembly of 1.7 GWh, alongside advanced testing systems such as brake and roll testers, battery cyclers, QA labs, wheel alignment setups, and water-shower testing units.
Sustainability & Localization
Aligned with Murugappa Group’s green vision, the plant integrates waste management, battery recycling, and EV charging systems. Future upgrades will incorporate renewable energy infrastructure. Currently, 74% of vehicle components are locally sourced, excluding imported battery cells.
Community & Industry Engagement
Montra Electric plans to run local skill development programmes and environmental drives like tree plantations as part of its community outreach.
Commenting on the launch, P.V. Satyanarayana, Chief Business Officer – Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech), said:
“The inauguration of our Manesar EV truck facility is a landmark in India’s transition toward sustainable logistics. With a women-led battery line, high localization, and digital-first operations, we are creating new benchmarks for green mobility and inclusive employment.”
Road Ahead
The company is expected to apply for benefits under the PM E-Drive Scheme while also seeking state-level incentives. With this plant, Montra Electric aims to make Manesar a key hub for next-generation electric freight solutions in India.
