Volvo Trucks Pioneers Stop-Start Engine Tech for Heavy-Duty Segment

Volvo Trucks has rolled out a breakthrough in heavy-duty transport with the launch of the world’s first stop-start engine technology for long-haul trucks. Designed to cut both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, the system builds on Volvo’s I-Roll and I-See technologies and will initially be offered on the FH and FH Aero models equipped with a 13-litre diesel engine.

How It Works

The stop/start feature is a first of its kind in the trucking world. Unlike traditional stop-start systems that work in urban traffic, Volvo’s solution activates above 60 kph. By constantly analysing road topography, gradient, and curvature data, the truck predicts when a downhill stretch is approaching. At that moment, the engine shuts off temporarily, allowing the vehicle to coast without burning fuel.

During this phase, fuel use drops to zero and tailpipe CO2 emissions are eliminated—contributing to both lower operating costs and reduced climate impact.

Innovation with Purpose

Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, said the feature highlights the company’s focus on practical sustainability:

“Our engineers have once again pushed the boundaries of what’s possible. This new stop-start engine function makes trucking more fuel-efficient while directly supporting our decarbonization journey.”

Depending on road and weather conditions, the new system is expected to deliver up to an additional 1% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions—on top of the savings already achieved by I-Roll.

Availability and Future Roadmap

Customers can place orders for the FH and FH Aero with this new-generation I-Roll system starting September 2025.

The launch aligns with Volvo Trucks’ broader decarbonization strategy, which combines renewable-fuel combustion engines, battery-electric trucks, and hydrogen fuel-cell technology. Together, these innovations reflect Volvo’s ambition to stay ahead in an industry under growing pressure to cut emissions without compromising performance.

A First Step Toward Smarter Trucking

By extending stop-start functionality to highway speeds and heavy-duty operations, Volvo Trucks is setting a new benchmark for the industry. What has long been seen as a feature for passenger cars or city vehicles is now being reimagined for the long-haul trucking ecosystem—a move that could redefine efficiency standards in commercial transport.
