Horse Powertrain X Range C15 Redefines Hybrid BEV Platforms

Horse Powertrain has introduced its latest innovation, the X Range C15 Direct Drive, an advanced all in one hybrid powertrain designed to transform how electric vehicle platforms are utilised. The system allows battery electric vehicle platforms to be adapted for hybrid applications including HEV, PHEV and REEV models. With India emerging as a key growth market, the company is positioning this technology as a flexible solution for global automakers.

X Range C15 Direct Drive enables multi powertrain flexibility

The X Range C15 Direct Drive was officially unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show 2026, highlighting its role as a complete toolkit for hybridising dedicated electric platforms. Unlike conventional systems, this solution allows manufacturers to use a single BEV platform across multiple vehicle types without major design or production changes.

This approach reduces development complexity and helps automakers respond faster to changing market demands. By replacing the rear electric drive unit, the system seamlessly integrates hybrid capability into existing electric architectures.

Integrated design combines engine motor and transmission

The X Range C15 Direct Drive features a compact structure that integrates a full hybrid system within a single housing. It includes a four cylinder 1.5 litre engine, hybrid transmission, electric motors and power electronics.

This ultra compact unit is designed to be mounted on the rear subframe, ensuring a double isolated installation that improves noise vibration and harshness levels. The flat profile layout also helps in efficient packaging, leaving more room for batteries or passenger space.

Performance options cater to multiple vehicle segments

The system offers flexibility through different engine configurations. The naturally aspirated version delivers up to 70 kW, making it suitable for smaller B and C segment vehicles. Meanwhile, the turbocharged version produces up to 120 kW, targeting larger D segment vehicles and light commercial vehicles.

This adaptability allows manufacturers to deploy the same core system across a wide range of vehicles, from compact cars to utility vehicles, without significant redesign.

Dual motor setup improves efficiency and driving modes

The X Range C15 Direct Drive uses a P1 plus P3 motor configuration for enhanced performance and efficiency. The P1 motor, positioned at the crankshaft, primarily functions as a generator and can deliver up to 70 kW in the naturally aspirated variant and 110 kW in the turbocharged version.

The P3 motor, placed at the transmission output shaft, provides electric traction. It can operate independently in serial mode or work alongside the engine in parallel mode. This direct connection between engine and wheels improves overall system efficiency compared to traditional hybrid setups.

Part of X Range family with scalable hybrid solutions

The X Range C15 Direct Drive expands Horse Powertrain’s X Range portfolio, which focuses on enabling hybrid functionality in electric platforms. It complements other systems like the F15 front drive replacement unit and the C15 range extender module.

Depending on requirements, the system can power the rear wheels independently or support all wheel drive configurations when paired with a front axle electric drive unit. Its rear axle placement also allows integration of exhaust and after treatment systems without compromising cabin or battery space.

Advanced electronics support modern hybrid architecture

The X Range C15 Direct Drive includes a complete set of power electronics required for modern hybrid vehicles. It is compatible with additional systems such as DC DC converters, onboard chargers and 800V charging boosters.

This ensures seamless integration with next generation vehicle architectures, making it a future ready solution for automakers transitioning between electric and hybrid technologies.
