Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Extend Up to Mussoorie
The government has announced a major expansion of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which will now be extended up to Mussoorie. The move is aimed at improving regional connectivity, easing traffic congestion in Dehradun, and enhancing travel convenience for tourists and daily commuters.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari shared the update while highlighting multiple ongoing and upcoming infrastructure developments across Uttarakhand.
Major Highway Expansion and Connectivity Push in Uttarakhand
The extension of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Mussoorie is part of a broader infrastructure push in Uttarakhand focused on strengthening road connectivity and reducing travel time across key routes. Alongside this project, several highway upgrades are nearing completion.
A 51 km six-lane road from Saharanpur Bypass to Haridwar is expected to open in June, further improving access between major cities. The government is also working on multiple bypasses, including projects in Rudrapur and Kashipur, scheduled for completion between late 2026 and early 2028.
In addition, the Paonta Sahib–Dehradun four-lane road is set to become operational soon, while the Dehradun–Jhajhra elevated road and Bhaniyawala–Jollygrant–Rishikesh corridor are in advanced stages of development.
Large-Scale Investment and Road Safety Projects
Massive Investment in Infrastructure
Nitin Gadkari revealed that road projects worth ₹1.3 lakh crore have been initiated in Uttarakhand. Out of this, ₹25,000 crore worth of projects have already been completed, while ₹35,000 crore worth of work is currently under execution. Additionally, plans worth ₹80,000 crore have been approved for future development.
Focus on Safety and Strategic Routes
The government is also prioritising road safety and strategic connectivity, especially in sensitive regions. A 370 km road from Tanakpur to Pithoragarh and Lipulekh is under construction as part of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route, with around 200 km already completed.
To reduce accident risks, ₹907 crore has been invested in black spot improvements, while a landslide mitigation plan is being developed with international technical support and local expertise.
Ongoing Projects and Future Road Network Development
- The Haridwar greenfield bypass Phase 1 is expected to be completed by October 2026
- Rudrapur bypass to be completed by October this year
- Kashipur bypass scheduled for December 2026
- Dehradun–Jhajhra elevated road likely to be completed next year
- Bhaniyawala–Jollygrant–Rishikesh road expected by 2028
- 640 km of the 825 km Char Dham Road Project already completed
- Remaining Rudraprayag–Gaurikund stretch likely to begin by December 2026
