Mysuru To Replace Volvo Fleet With Electric Buses

Mysuru is set to transform its public transport system as electric buses replace the existing Volvo fleet in a phased manner by 2027. The move aims to introduce eco-friendly, air-conditioned buses while maintaining the same level of comfort for daily commuters.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has already placed a request for 100 electric buses, which are expected to arrive early next year as part of a larger push towards sustainable mobility.

Mysuru To Receive Electric Buses Under PM-eBus Seva Scheme

Under the Central government’s PM-eBus Seva scheme, Karnataka has been allocated 750 air-conditioned electric buses. Out of this, Mysuru is likely to receive around 100 electric buses to strengthen its city transport network.

Officials stated that these electric buses will serve as a replacement for the phased-out Volvo fleet, ensuring passengers continue to experience high-quality travel. The initiative is also expected to reduce emissions and promote cleaner urban mobility in the city.

To support this transition, a large KSRTC bus depot is currently under construction at Bannimantap. The facility will include dedicated infrastructure for electric buses, such as charging stations and maintenance systems. Once completed, the depot will play a key role in managing the upcoming fleet.

Currently, KSRTC’s rural division operates 14 electric buses, but infrastructure remains limited with only two charging points available. Authorities have acknowledged that this setup will not be sufficient for a fleet of 100 electric buses.

The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation has been assigned the task of installing additional charging stations. Once the depot is ready, the charging infrastructure will be developed and handed over to KSRTC to ensure smooth operations of the expanded electric bus network.

Conclusion

The introduction of electric buses in Mysuru marks a significant step towards sustainable public transport. With improved infrastructure and support under the PM-eBus Seva scheme, the city is preparing for a cleaner and more efficient commuting experience by 2027.
