Volvo CE shuts Rokbak unit in strategic overhaul
Volvo Construction Equipment has announced the closure of its Rokbak business as part of a long-term strategic restructuring plan. The decision comes after sustained financial losses and rising operational pressures that made the unit’s performance unsustainable.
Rokbak, previously known as Terex Trucks, has been a key manufacturer of off-highway articulated haulers for more than four decades. Despite generating revenues of SEK 1.0 billion in 2025, the business continued to remain loss-making, prompting a full shutdown decision.
Rokbak closure follows financial strain and market challenges
The Rokbak closure is driven by weak profitability and increasing global supply chain and operational costs. The unit has struggled to maintain financial stability despite its long-standing presence in the heavy equipment industry.
The business will have a significant financial impact on Volvo CE’s 2026 results, with an estimated operating income hit of around SEK 0.7 billion in the first quarter. Out of this, approximately SEK 0.4 billion is linked to non-cash items, including goodwill impairment.
Production of Rokbak articulated haulers is expected to cease in the second half of 2026, marking a complete exit from the segment.
Volvo CE shifts focus to core hauling solutions
The decision aligns with Volvo CE’s broader strategy to strengthen its core hauling and construction equipment portfolio. The company plans to redirect investments toward innovation, product development, and expansion of its main business lines.
While Rokbak will be discontinued, the Motherwell facility in Scotland will continue operations. It will remain an important hub for designing and manufacturing Volvo rigid haulers and supporting future development projects.
Consultation process and workforce transition underway
The Rokbak shutdown is currently subject to a formal consultation process expected to conclude by the third quarter of 2026. Volvo CE has stated that it will work closely with employees, unions, and government authorities to manage the transition responsibly.
The closure reflects a broader industry trend where manufacturers are streamlining operations to focus on profitable and scalable product segments.
The Rokbak business closure marks a major strategic shift for Volvo Construction Equipment as it focuses on long-term sustainability and core product innovation. While the decision strengthens future business direction, it also signals the end of a long-running legacy in articulated hauler manufacturing.
