Ashok Leyland Launches EV Battery Pack Facility In Pillaipakkam
Ashok Leyland has taken a major step toward strengthening India’s electric mobility ecosystem by breaking ground for a new EV battery pack manufacturing facility in Pillaipakkam near Chennai. With an investment of Rs 400–500 crore, the project aims to localise battery production, enhance advanced EV solutions, and create employment opportunities in Tamil Nadu.

The new greenfield facility in Pillaipakkam will focus on producing advanced battery packs for electric vehicles, supporting Ashok Leyland’s broader strategy for sustainable mobility. Funded as part of investments from the Hinduja Group, the project aligns with Tamil Nadu’s Electric Vehicle Policy 2023 and India’s national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
By establishing a local supply chain for EV batteries, Ashok Leyland aims to improve production efficiency, develop specialised talent, and expand its electric vehicle offerings. The facility is also expected to strengthen research and development in EV technology, reinforcing Tamil Nadu as a leading hub for automotive innovation.
Government Officials And Leadership Attend Groundbreaking
The ceremony was graced by Thiru M.K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who unveiled the foundation plaque. Thiru T. R. B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions, and Commerce, along with representatives from Guidance Tamil Nadu and the State Industries Promotion Corporation, attended the event. Ashok Leyland’s MD and CEO Shenu Agarwal and Executive Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja were also present.
Dheeraj Hinduja said, “The groundbreaking of this facility marks an important step in our electric mobility journey and reinforces our commitment to building a strong domestic EV ecosystem.” Shenu Agarwal added, “Battery pack technology is central to electric mobility. This facility will enable advanced solutions with greater safety, efficiency, and reliability while creating opportunities in high-technology manufacturing.”
Impact On Jobs And Skill Development
The new facility is expected to generate employment opportunities and strengthen skill development in Tamil Nadu. Ashok Leyland has already invested more than Rs 9,000 crore in the state, creating over 37,000 jobs. The new battery pack unit adds to this effort, positioning Tamil Nadu as a hub for advanced EV manufacturing and research.
