UP Launches Rural Bus Connectivity Scheme 2026

The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the Mukhyamantri Gram Parivahan Yojana-2026, aiming to provide regular bus services to all 59,163 gram sabhas in the state. Nearly 12,200 of these villages currently lack bus connectivity. The scheme was announced in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Lok Bhavan and is designed to address last-mile transport challenges in rural areas.

How the Scheme Works

Under this initiative, private bus operators are exempt from both permits and road taxes, removing major financial barriers. Each operator must run at least two buses daily to every panchayat within their approved block. Permits will be valid for ten years, and buses can operate for up to fifteen years. The scheme also promotes local employment by hiring drivers, conductors, and cleaners from nearby villages, allowing buses to stay overnight locally and start early morning services efficiently.

Bus Operations and Scheduling

The bus schedule is designed around rural residents’ daily routines. Vehicles will remain overnight in villages, depart early in the morning, pass through block and tehsil headquarters, and reach district centers by around 10:00 AM. They will serve other routes during the day and return to villages between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM. This ensures villagers can complete trips for education, healthcare, markets, offices, or courts within the same day.

Vehicles and Capacity

Many rural roads cannot accommodate full-sized buses, so smaller vehicles with a seating capacity of 28 passengers will operate on these routes. Around 5,000 of the unconnected villages fall under this category, making these compact buses essential for efficient service coverage.

Oversight and Implementation

A district-level committee led by the District Magistrate will oversee the scheme in each district. Other members include the Chief Development Officer, Superintendent of Police, and transport department officials. This body will finalize routes and determine affordable fare structures while ensuring smooth operations.

Benefits for Villagers

The scheme will improve access to education, healthcare, markets, and government offices for rural residents. By enabling local employment and connecting remote villages to district centers, the Mukhyamantri Gram Parivahan Yojana-2026 aims to enhance rural mobility and foster economic and social development across Uttar Pradesh.
