Ahmedabad to Get 1,000 AC Electric Buses Under PM E-DRIVE Scheme
Ahmedabad is set to expand its sustainable public transport network with the addition of 1,000 AC electric buses under the Centre’s PM E-DRIVE Scheme. This initiative aims to promote green mobility while modernizing the city’s bus fleet for environmentally friendly operations.
Work Order Issued for Electric Buses
The Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd (AJL) board approved a work order on March 5, 2026, to procure a total of 1,000 electric AC buses. These buses will serve both Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) under a gross cost contract-based agreement.
This move follows a joint tender process conducted by the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) and Convergence Energy Services Ltd, which allocated the buses to Ahmedabad under the central scheme.
Expansion of Ahmedabad’s Electric Fleet
Currently, Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited operates 350 buses, of which 200 are electric. With the new procurement:
- 250 additional electric buses will be launched in the near future.
- Plans are underway to fully convert the BRTS bus fleet to electric vehicles.
The city’s authorities, including Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, AMTS, and BRTS, are continuously working to improve green mobility while offering modern, sustainable, and environmentally friendly public transport services.
Benefits for the City
The addition of 1,000 AC electric buses will:
- Reduce carbon emissions and air pollution in Ahmedabad.
- Increase the comfort and reliability of city buses.
- Enhance the capacity of public transport systems for daily commuters.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader goal of promoting electric mobility and supporting environmentally conscious urban transport solutions.
Conclusion
Ahmedabad’s upcoming fleet of 1,000 AC electric buses under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme marks a significant step toward sustainable public transportation. With full electrification of the BRTS and AMTS fleets, the city is poised to provide cleaner, more efficient, and modern commuting options for its residents.
