ACCIONA Secures Contract for 4,000kW EV Charging Hub in Madrid
ACCIONA has been awarded a contract by the Madrid regional government to construct and operate a public electric vehicle (EV) charging hub within the M-30 ring road. Once completed, the facility will become the largest 100% renewable EV charging hub in Madrid, repurposing a decommissioned petrol station into a modern, sustainable charging destination.
Scheduled for completion in 2027, the hub will deliver a total installed capacity of 4,000 kilowatts (kW). It will feature 20 ultra-fast charging points, including 19 for standard vehicles and one dedicated to heavy-duty vehicles. The facility will also include a battery-swapping station for silent electric vehicles, supporting faster turnaround for EV users.
Renewable Energy and Sustainability
ACCIONA plans to operate the hub for 30 years using only certified renewable energy. Solar panels installed on-site will support self-consumption and are expected to generate a net annual energy surplus of over 35,000kWh.
To further enhance environmental benefits, the hub will feature a photocatalytic façade designed to remove pollutants from the air. A real-time system will also track renewable energy usage, ensuring transparency and compliance with Madrid’s decarbonisation goals. The construction will use sustainable materials including wood, photocatalytic ceramics, and locally sourced natural stone.
Facilities and Community Integration
The hub will include a single canopy covering both the charging points and a user services area. Ground floor amenities will feature vending machines and accessible toilets. The first floor will serve as a multipurpose space for educational programs, community outreach, and events promoting electric mobility.
ACCIONA brings extensive expertise to the project, currently providing access to over 5,000 charging points across Spain and Portugal. The company’s long-term operation of the Madrid hub will support cleaner, faster, and more reliable EV infrastructure in the city.
