GreenCell Mobility to Deploy 75 Electric Buses in Puducherry
GreenCell Mobility (GCM) has announced the deployment of 75 electric buses in Puducherry, marking a major step toward zero-emission public transport in the Union Territory. The announcement was made at an event led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the central government’s commitment to clean mobility initiatives across smaller urban and semi-urban centres. The buses will operate from the Mettupalayam Bus Depot and are supplied by domestic electric vehicle manufacturer EKA Mobility.
The fleet includes 25 nine-metre buses and 50 twelve-metre buses, all air-conditioned, designed to meet the operational demands of both feeder and trunk routes. Each vehicle is equipped with an Integrated Transport Management System (ITMS), real-time vehicle tracking, passenger information displays, and internal and reversing cameras. Accessibility for differently-abled passengers is also ensured. The deployment is expected to reduce tailpipe emissions, improve route reliability, and enhance passenger experience across Puducherry’s public transport network.
Features and Benefits of the Puducherry Electric Bus Fleet
The 75-bus fleet demonstrates several operational and sustainability advantages:
- Diverse vehicle sizes to match feeder and trunk corridor requirements.
- Real-time tracking and ITMS integration for efficient fleet management.
- Accessibility features for differently-abled passengers.
- Air-conditioned comfort to encourage higher public transport adoption.
- Reduced greenhouse gas emissions contributing to cleaner urban air.
According to Devendra Chawla, Managing Director and CEO of GreenCell Mobility, the Puducherry project reflects the company’s strategy to build sustainable public transport infrastructure beyond major metropolitan centres. The initiative is supported by institutional capital and government policy, enabling reliable, long-term electric mobility solutions.
Part of a Broader National Electric Mobility Push
The Puducherry deployment is part of a larger nationwide rollout by GreenCell Mobility. Currently, the company is executing contracts for 915 buses in Telangana, 750 in Andhra Pradesh, 700 in Uttar Pradesh, 582 in Madhya Pradesh, 570 in Delhi, 400 in Karnataka, and 150 in Surat. Additionally, 50 intercity electric buses operate for the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).
All projects are implemented under national programs like the National E-Bus Program and the PM Seva E-Mobility Program, which provide financial and policy support to state transport authorities and private operators. GreenCell Mobility operates under an Electric Mobility-as-a-Service (eMaaS) model, managing end-to-end operations, maintenance, and charging infrastructure, rather than selling buses outright.
GreenCell Mobility’s Expanding Electric Transport Network
GreenCell Mobility currently operates over 1,200 electric buses nationwide, supported by a network of more than 270 charging stations. Through its intercity brand, NueGo, the company also runs over 300 premium electric coaches connecting more than 100 locations across India, with a range of over 250 kilometres per charge. The company is backed by Eversource Capital, a sustainable infrastructure investment firm focused on electric mobility, renewable energy, and resource efficiency.
The Puducherry deployment exemplifies a growing trend among Union Territories and smaller states to modernise public transport through partnerships with private electric mobility operators. By leveraging central government funding schemes and institutional capital, such initiatives are making clean, reliable, and accessible public transport more financially viable and scalable.
