BorgWarner Secures Contract for REEV Trucks and SUVs
BorgWarner has signed a major contract with a leading North American automaker to supply 800-volt integrated drive modules and generator modules with dual inverters for range-extended electric vehicles (REEVs). These modules will be used in electric trucks and large-frame SUVs, with production expected to start in 2029. The contract highlights BorgWarner’s growing expertise in electrified powertrain systems and advanced mobility solutions.
Innovative Drive and Generator Modules
The 800-volt integrated drive module (iDM) combines an induction electric machine with a gearbox, designed for both hybrid and electric applications. The generator module pairs a permanent magnet electric machine with a dual inverter mounted on the internal combustion engine, extending vehicle range while keeping ICE functionality available on demand. Both modules are engineered to fit compact packaging without compromising performance.
The project also introduces BorgWarner’s next-generation Viper power technology, a proprietary, power-dense module that enables smaller, more cost-efficient dual inverter designs while maintaining high performance and efficiency.
Strategic Impact for BorgWarner and the EV Industry
“This contract demonstrates our breadth across the propulsion spectrum, from high-performance drive units to inverters and control systems,” said Dr. Stefan Demmerle, Vice President and General Manager of BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems. The deal reinforces BorgWarner’s strong partnership with a top OEM and positions the company as a key player in the development of range-extended electric trucks and large SUVs.
