Rs 1,075 Crore Infra Push for East Delhi Roads and Drains
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has rolled out infrastructure projects worth nearly Rs 1,075 crore for East Delhi, setting the stage for a comprehensive upgrade of roads and drainage systems across trans Yamuna areas. The large-scale initiative aims to ease traffic congestion and address recurring waterlogging issues that intensify during the monsoon.
The works will be jointly undertaken by the Public Works Department and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, with a focus on long term durability and coordinated execution.
Major Allocation for Road Strengthening
Out of the total outlay, around Rs 782 crore has been earmarked for the improvement and strengthening of 236 roads. The objective is to improve connectivity and reduce bottlenecks in densely populated localities.
To enhance pedestrian safety and streamline traffic flow, five foot overbridges will also be constructed at busy intersections at a cost of Rs 21 crore. These additions are expected to reduce risks for pedestrians while ensuring smoother vehicular movement.
Drainage Upgrade to Tackle Waterlogging
Nearly Rs 272 crore has been allocated for drainage modernisation. The plan includes rebuilding 10 drains and increasing the discharge capacity of three existing drains. These measures are designed to curb flooding that frequently disrupts traffic and damages infrastructure during heavy rainfall.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, synchronising road construction with drainage upgrades will help prevent repeated deterioration caused by stagnant water accumulation.
Flood Control and Structural Reinforcement
As part of broader flood management efforts, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department will construct 24 boundary walls. In addition, 18 roads and bridges will be developed to strengthen embankments and improve structural resilience in vulnerable zones.
Focus on Quality and Timely Completion
Speaking at Ramlila Ground in Vivek Vihar, the Chief Minister emphasised that strong civic infrastructure is essential for balanced urban development. She assured that the projects would result in visible improvements on the ground.
She also stressed strict adherence to timelines, quality benchmarks and transparency in implementation. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma described the investment as a significant step towards reinforcing civic infrastructure in the capital.
