TGSRTC Plans 2,800 Electric Buses, Converts 240 Diesel Vehicles

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has announced a major plan to induct 2,800 electric buses within Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits by 2027, marking a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility.

Retrofitting 240 Diesel Buses

As part of this initiative, 240 existing diesel buses will be converted into electric vehicles. TGSRTC awarded contracts to Sai Green Mobility for 200 buses and Kalyani Powertrain Limited for 40 buses.

This effort builds on a pilot project launched in 2023, where a diesel bus from the Mushirabad depot was successfully converted to electric and currently operates from the Uppal depot, demonstrating the model’s feasibility.

Current Fleet and Expansion

Currently, 325 electric buses operate from six depots across Hyderabad. An additional 175 e-buses are planned for induction in the current financial year.

To support this transition, charging infrastructure is being expanded at 19 depots, alongside the construction of 10 new depots and 10 dedicated charging stations. The estimated cost of this infrastructure development is ₹392 crore.

Environmental and Public Health Benefits

Officials state that the induction of 2,800 electric buses by 2027 will significantly reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, and encourage greater public transport usage, contributing to better public health outcomes.

Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy highlighted that the initiative will strengthen Hyderabad’s public transport network while aligning with the state’s green mobility goals.
