Mahindra Construction Equipment has positioned its EarthMaster backhoe loader series as a heavy-duty solution for contractors handling demanding infrastructure, urban development, and industrial projects. The series includes three primary variants—EarthMaster SX, SXL, and SX 4WD—each designed with specific site conditions and operational requirements in mind. While the SX caters to standard urban construction, the SXL is tailored for high-loading applications into taller trucks, and the SX 4WD is engineered for challenging terrains such as muddy, uneven, or low-traction surfaces.

With multiple configurations available, contractors often find it difficult to select the most suitable model. A closer look at performance, hydraulics, lifting capacity, and pricing helps bring clarity to this decision-making process.

Engine Performance and Power Delivery

The EarthMaster SX and SX 4WD share the same Mahindra DITEC Turbocharged Intercooled Diesel Engine with a displacement of 3532 cc. This powertrain generates 79.89 HP and a peak torque of 306 Nm, ensuring consistent performance for continuous digging, loading, and material handling operations. The higher horsepower in these two variants helps maintain speed and stability even under heavy workload conditions.

In contrast, the EarthMaster SXL is equipped with a NEF 3.5L engine that produces 74 HP. Although its horsepower is slightly lower, it delivers a higher maximum torque of 400 Nm, enabling better handling of heavy materials at lower engine speeds. This makes the SXL particularly effective for operations that require strong pushing, lifting, and digging force rather than speed.

Hydraulic System and Efficiency

All three EarthMaster models feature a 100-litre hydraulic oil system with a 3000-hour oil change interval, helping contractors reduce maintenance frequency and operating costs. The open-centre hydraulic system ensures smooth and steady control by continuously circulating hydraulic oil during operations.

While the hydraulic architecture remains similar, the pump flow rate differs slightly across models. The SX and SX 4WD deliver 115 litres per minute, making them suitable for general excavation and material movement. The SXL, however, offers a marginally higher pump flow of 117 litres per minute, providing smoother handling—especially beneficial for less experienced operators or smaller contractors.

Loader and Backhoe Capabilities

All three variants come with a standard loader bucket capacity of 1.1 cubic metres. However, their load-over height varies. The SX and SX 4WD offer a load-over height of 3253 mm, while the SXL provides a higher clearance of 3452 mm. This allows the SXL to load material into taller trucks and hoppers with greater ease, minimizing spillage and improving operational efficiency.

In terms of loader dump height, the SXL again leads with 2900 mm, compared to 2708 mm for the SX and 2715 mm for the SX 4WD.

On the backhoe side, all three models share the same 0.27 cubic metre bucket capacity. However, lifting capacity differs significantly. Meanwhile, those frequently loading into taller trucks or seeking smoother hydraulic control would benefit most from the SXL.
