Barrier-Free Toll Plazas to Launch Across India

Barrier-Free Toll Plazas to Revolutionize Highway Travel in India

Commuters and transporters on key highways may soon experience a faster, smoother journey as the central government plans to implement barrier-free toll plazas at 21 locations across India. Announcing the initiative in the Lok Sabha, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted that vehicles will pass through toll zones without stopping while tolls are automatically deducted.

How Barrier-Free Tolling Works

Barrier-free tolling combines two technologies familiar to most highway users:

  • ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras, which read vehicle number plates as they move through the toll zone.
  • FASTag RFID readers, which identify the vehicle’s FASTag and trigger automatic payment.

The system eliminates the traditional stop-and-go mechanism, promising reduced congestion, smoother traffic flow, and fewer lane-changing conflicts during peak hours.

Initial Rollout and Key Locations

The first phase focuses on the Delhi-NCR region, with plazas such as:

  • Kukrola
  • Kherki Daula on NH-48
  • Badarpur-Faridabad on NH-19
  • Bijwasan toll on Dwarka Expressway

Execution has already begun for Mundaka toll on UER-II, Delhi, and Gharaunda toll on NH-44, Haryana.

Beyond NCR, the rollout will include major corridors:

  • Eight plazas on NH-48 (Delhi to Chennai)
  • Four plazas on NH-44 (Srinagar to Kanyakumari)
  • Two plazas on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway

States covered in this initiative include Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Assam. Fifteen plazas have already moved past the RFP stage and are under execution.

Compliance and Penalties

To ensure adherence, the ministry has outlined stricter penalties: delayed payments beyond seven days will double the toll amount. Enforcement depends on the readability of number plates and functional FASTags, making proper maintenance essential for drivers.

What Drivers Should Expect

There is no single go-live date for all 21 plazas. Some may begin operations within the next year, while others in the bidding phase will take longer.

While barrier-free tolling is expected to benefit daily commuters and commercial vehicles, challenges such as dirty or damaged plates, mismatched FASTag details, and system glitches could result in disputes. Drivers will need to ensure their tags and plates are in proper order to enjoy seamless travel.

A New Era for Highway Efficiency

The barrierless toll initiative is set to transform highway logistics in India, easing congestion, reducing travel time, and creating a more efficient system for commercial and private vehicles alike. If successful, this model could become a blueprint for modern tolling across the country.
