Tata Motors Records Strong Commercial Vehicle Growth in January 2026
Tata Motors has reported a robust start to 2026 with significant growth in its commercial vehicle (CV) sales for January. The company sold a total of 41,549 commercial vehicles across domestic and international markets, reflecting a 29.9% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to 31,988 units sold in January 2025. The performance highlights sustained demand for Tata’s trucks and small commercial vehicles, supported by improved freight movement, infrastructure development, and fleet expansion.
The company’s January 2026 sales report covers performance across heavy commercial vehicles (HCV), intermediate light and medium commercial vehicles (ILMCV), small commercial vehicles (SCV) cargo and pickups, as well as passenger carriers.
HCV and SCV Lead Domestic Sales Growth
Tata Motors saw strong traction in its heavy-duty truck segment in the domestic market. In January 2026, the company sold 12,691 HCV trucks in India, a substantial 41.2% increase from 8,990 units sold in January 2025. This surge reflects rising demand from logistics, mining, and infrastructure sectors that rely heavily on high-capacity transport vehicles.
The SCV Cargo & Pickups category also performed well, with domestic sales rising 29.5% YoY. Tata Motors sold 14,520 units in this segment in January 2026, compared to 11,213 units in the same month last year. This indicates strong uptake among small businesses, last-mile delivery operators, and rural transport users.
ILMCV Growth Offsets Slight Dip in Passenger Carriers
In the ILMCV segment, Tata Motors recorded 7,071 unit sales in January 2026, marking a 33.5% year-on-year increase from 5,298 units sold in January 2025. This growth suggests steady demand for medium-duty vehicles used in intra-city logistics, construction, and distribution networks.
However, the passenger carrier segment saw a marginal decline. Tata Motors sold 4,562 passenger carriers in January 2026, slightly down by 0.4% from 4,582 units in January 2025. While the drop was minimal, it was the only category that did not witness YoY growth in domestic sales.
MH&ICV Segment Shows Strong Momentum
Tata Motors’ MH&ICV (Medium, Heavy, and Intermediate Commercial Vehicles) category, which includes both trucks and buses, performed exceptionally well. The company sold 19,676 MH&ICV units in India in January 2026, up 29.98% from 15,137 units in January 2025.
When domestic and export sales are combined, total MH&ICV sales stood at 20,792 units in January 2026, reflecting a 29.33% YoY increase from 16,076 units in January 2025. This growth highlights Tata Motors’ expanding footprint in both domestic and global markets.
Exports Rise Sharply in January
Tata Motors also strengthened its presence in international markets. In January 2026, the company exported 2,705 commercial vehicles, registering a notable 42% YoY growth compared to 1,905 units shipped in January 2025. The rise in exports underscores increasing global acceptance of Tata’s commercial vehicles across emerging markets.
Overall Performance and Outlook
Including both domestic and export sales, Tata Motors sold 41,549 commercial vehicles in January 2026, up 29.9% YoY. Domestic sales alone stood at 38,844 units, reflecting a 29.1% increase from 30,083 units sold in January 2025.
With advanced powertrains, integrated fleet technology, and versatile vehicle offerings across multiple applications, Tata Motors continues to play a key role in supporting India’s logistics, transportation, and economic development. If this momentum continues, the company is well-positioned for sustained growth throughout 2026.
