Madurai to Get New Two-Lane Road to Decongest Key Routes
The State Highways Department has commenced work on an 8-kilometre, two-lane road connecting Arapalayam and Samayanallur, aimed at reducing congestion on some of Madurai’s busiest routes. Officials confirmed that the project, which began in September 2024, is progressing steadily and is targeted for completion by February 2026.
The new corridor is being constructed along the northern bank of the Vaigai River, beginning near the Kamarajar bridge at Arapalayam and extending to Samayanallur, where it will connect to National Highway-44. Eventually, the road will merge with the Kanniyakumari National Highway, providing a smooth and continuous route for commuters heading to southern districts.
Project Specifications and Safety Measures
The road will have a width of 10.5 metres and is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 1.76 billion. To ensure structural integrity and prevent soil erosion along the riverbank, retaining walls are being built as part of the project.
Additionally, the project includes the construction of two canal bridges near Paravai. The first bridge is planned about 2,800 metres from the Theekathir area, while the second will be constructed roughly 6,200 metres from the Kamarajar bridge in Arapalayam. These bridges are expected to maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure connectivity across natural water channels.
Impact on Traffic Conditions
Currently, vehicles travelling towards Dindigul National Highway are forced to navigate narrow and congested stretches such as Fatima College Road, which often slows travel and increases commute times. The new road will provide an alternative, direct route, allowing motorists to bypass heavily trafficked city roads.
Once completed, the corridor is expected to significantly improve travel for commuters heading towards Virudhunagar, Dindigul, and other southern districts, reducing congestion and easing traffic pressure on existing urban roads. Officials believe that this new infrastructure will not only benefit daily commuters but also support logistics and transport efficiency in the region.
The State Highways Department has committed to completing the project on schedule while adhering to safety and quality standards, making it one of Madurai’s key road developments in recent years.
