CRUT E-Bus Fire Controlled Safely in Bhubaneswar

A CRUT (Capital Region Urban Transport) electric bus caught fire at the Chandrasekharpur depot on Sunday afternoon, officials confirmed. Thanks to prompt action by depot staff and the fire brigade, the incident was quickly controlled, and the bus did not sustain significant damage.

According to CRUT sources, the e-bus had completed its scheduled route and returned to the depot for charging around 3:00 pm. Approximately 30 minutes later, smoke was detected from the battery compartment, prompting an immediate response. Depot personnel attempted to contain the fire using available extinguishers while alerting the local fire services. With the assistance of the fire brigade, the fire was successfully brought under control.

“The staff present at the depot immediately responded and attempted to control the situation using the available fire extinguishers. Meanwhile, the fire services were informed, and together with our team, the fire was brought under control. The e-bus did not sustain any significant damage,” a CRUT statement read.

In response to the incident, CRUT has ordered the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the cause. The committee will comprise officials from TP Central Odisha Distribution Limited, the Transport Department, the bus manufacturing company, and technical officers from CRUT. “The committee will conduct a thorough examination to identify the exact cause of the incident and will submit a detailed report. This step has been taken to prevent any similar occurrences in the future,” the statement added.

This incident follows another fire-related situation on Saturday when an Ama Bus caught fire at Kalinga Studio Square. All 26 passengers on board were safely evacuated thanks to the alertness of the driver and bus staff. No casualties were reported in either incident, highlighting the importance of strict safety measures in electric and conventional buses alike.

CRUT officials have emphasised the safety of passengers and staff as a top priority. Both incidents underscore the growing attention needed for battery management and preventive maintenance in electric bus fleets as Bhubaneswar expands its EV-based public transport network.

Authorities continue to monitor electric vehicle operations closely while ensuring rapid response protocols are in place to safeguard commuters and prevent property damage.
