Uttarakhand Adds 100 Buses, Plans Electric Fleet
In a significant boost to public transport services, the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) has added 100 new buses to its fleet, with plans to introduce electric buses in the near future. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami flagged off the new vehicles from the Chief Minister’s camp office during New Year celebrations, underscoring the state government’s commitment to safer, technology-driven, and sustainable public transportation.
Among the newly added buses, 10 air-conditioned buses and two sleeper buses were launched on a contract basis for public use. These additions aim to enhance passenger capacity and service quality, particularly in hill districts where steep gradients and challenging terrain have historically affected bus operations. Reliable public transport remains vital for residents relying on buses for education, healthcare, markets, and tourism.
Technology Upgrades for Safety and Efficiency
All new buses will be equipped with modern safety and monitoring systems, including GPS tracking, CCTV cameras, e-ticketing facilities, fleet monitoring tools, and scheduled maintenance systems. These upgrades are designed to enable real-time vehicle tracking, reduce manual ticketing, record onboard incidents, and ensure adherence to routes and schedules, improving overall operational efficiency.
Electric Buses Planned
The Uttarakhand government also announced plans to introduce electric buses to the UTC fleet. While exact timelines and routes were not disclosed, this move aligns with broader efforts across India to promote cleaner, sustainable public transport solutions.
Infrastructure Development
In addition to fleet expansion, the state has completed 13 new bus stations and workshops, with 14 more under construction, including four Inter-State Bus Terminals (ISBTs). These facilities will support maintenance, reduce vehicle downtime, and ensure smoother operations for both long-distance and high-altitude routes.
Employee Support Measures
The government has implemented Dearness Allowance revisions, applied Seventh Pay Commission recommendations, and undertaken recruitment efforts to address manpower shortages. Adequate staffing is crucial for maintenance, route planning, and service continuity, particularly during peak travel seasons and harsh weather conditions.
Government Commitment to Service Excellence
Chief Minister Dhami emphasized that the transport corporation is a key service delivery institution, with the government committed to making it more accountable and responsive. The flag-off ceremony was attended by cabinet ministers, MPs, legislators, and senior officials, highlighting the state’s focus on modernizing public transport.
With these initiatives, Uttarakhand is investing in expanded bus capacity, upgraded technology, improved infrastructure, and a gradual transition to electric mobility, reflecting a comprehensive approach to safer and more sustainable public transportation.
