Odisha Imposes Night-Time Construction Ban to Combat Pollution
The Odisha government has announced a temporary night-time ban on construction activities in major cities, including Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, as part of efforts to tackle rising urban air pollution. Under the new directive, all construction and demolition work within these urban areas will be prohibited daily from 6 pm to 10 am until further notice.
Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia explained that the move aims to reduce dust and other airborne particulates during hours when pollution levels tend to spike and atmospheric conditions make dispersion difficult. To complement the restrictions, officials have been directed to suspend demolition of old buildings within municipal limits during this period, minimising additional dust emissions.
The state has also implemented measures to limit the entry and movement of heavy vehicles within city limits to curb emissions. Police and transport authorities will step up inspections to ensure that vehicles comply with emissions standards, helping to further reduce the environmental impact of urban transport.
In addition to regulatory measures, authorities are conducting active dust control operations, including regular water sprinkling along major roads and highways to suppress dust stirred up by traffic. The government has also imposed restrictions on roadside food stalls and hotels, banning the use of coal or firewood for cooking. Open burning of garbage, dry leaves, or plastics is strictly prohibited.
The Odisha government has warned that violations of these rules will attract strict penalties, and dedicated enforcement teams will conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance. The initiative is part of a broader anti-pollution effort aimed at improving air quality, protecting public health, and mitigating the environmental impact of urbanisation in the state.
Officials emphasise that reducing nighttime construction and demolition, combined with stricter vehicle emissions checks and dust control operations, is expected to significantly reduce particulate matter in the air. Citizens are encouraged to cooperate with authorities and follow guidelines to support these efforts.
With cities like Bhubaneswar and Cuttack facing rising pollution levels in recent years, the temporary ban reflects Odisha’s proactive approach to urban environmental management. The government continues to monitor air quality closely and may consider further measures to ensure healthier living conditions for residents.
