BPCL Launches First 1G Bio-Ethanol Tanker Shipment
In a major boost to India’s renewable energy sector, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has flagged off its first tanker carrying domestically produced 1G bio-ethanol from the Bargarh Bio-Refinery to the IOTL Raipur Depot. The ceremony was led by Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) and holding additional charge as Chairman & Managing Director of BPCL.
This milestone aligns with the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme, a government initiative designed to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, curb carbon emissions, and support the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. The introduction of BPCL’s domestically produced bio-ethanol is expected to strengthen domestic supply chains, promote sustainable energy, and accelerate India’s transition toward cleaner fuel alternatives.
During his visit to the Bargarh facility, Khanna reviewed the bio-refinery operations and lauded the efforts of the project and operations teams, noting that their coordinated execution made this historic launch possible. He emphasized BPCL’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and energy security, highlighting the company’s role in India’s long-term economic and environmental development.
BPCL has been actively expanding its bio-refinery capabilities in recent years to diversify energy sources and support government mandates on renewable fuels. The commissioning of the Bargarh Bio-Refinery and the first shipment of 1G ethanol represent a critical step in India’s renewable energy journey, showcasing the potential of domestic resources to meet growing fuel demands sustainably.
Experts note that the development of homegrown bio-ethanol production not only reduces dependency on imports but also aligns with India’s broader net-zero and carbon reduction goals. By integrating biofuels into the mainstream fuel supply chain, initiatives like these are expected to significantly impact emissions reduction and energy security over the coming years.
BPCL’s foray into 1G bio-ethanol production underlines the company’s strategic vision for a Viksit Bharat, where renewable energy solutions are central to growth and environmental sustainability. The Bargarh Bio-Refinery now stands as a flagship facility, paving the way for future expansions in biofuel production and supporting the nation’s green energy ambitions.
With this launch, BPCL not only strengthens its portfolio in sustainable fuels but also sets a precedent for other energy companies to embrace domestic renewable alternatives, accelerating India’s path toward cleaner and more self-reliant energy solutions.
