SETC Launches Ultra-Luxury Multi-Axle Volvo Buses
The State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) has elevated passenger travel in Tamil Nadu with the launch of 20 ultra-luxury multi-axle Volvo buses, offering a high-end experience for both inter-State and intra-State routes. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially flagged off the buses, which were procured at a cost of ₹34.30 crore. This initiative forms part of a larger fleet expansion, including 110 single-axle buses, bringing the total new additions across the State to 130.
Designed on a robust monocoque chassis, the Volvo 9600 buses feature 51 captain-style seats with calf support, panoramic viewing windows, and overhead luggage compartments. Air-spring suspension and advanced shock absorber systems ensure a smooth ride, while safety measures such as roof escape hatches and fire protection systems provide added security.
The buses are powered by modern engines compliant with Bharat Stage-VI emission norms, reflecting SETC’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Electronic diagnostic controls have also been integrated to detect and address technical issues promptly, ensuring reliable performance on long routes.
SETC has deployed the multi-axle Volvo buses on key routes connecting major cities and towns, including Tirunelveli, Tiruchendur, Tiruppur, Madurai, Thanjavur, Salem, Coimbatore, Nagercoil, Tiruchi, and Bengaluru. The fares have been set at a competitive rate of ₹1.80 per kilometre, positioning SETC to compete effectively with private operators while maintaining affordability for passengers.
To operate the new buses efficiently, 65 drivers and conductors with over a decade of service underwent specialised training. Volvo-certified driving tests were conducted, and only certified drivers have been assigned, ensuring both safety and operational excellence.
Passengers have already started experiencing the benefits of the upgraded fleet. T. Shanmugam, who travelled from Chennai to Thanjavur, praised the comfort and competitive pricing of the service, while suggesting that fewer stops could further improve travel times.
SETC’s move mirrors earlier efforts by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), which has long operated multi-axle Volvo buses under the ‘Airavat’ brand. With the Volvo 9600, SETC aims to provide a similar, enhanced travel experience to residents of Tamil Nadu, combining luxury, safety, and efficiency for long-distance journeys.
