Caterpillar Unveils Major Updates for Its 5–10 Ton Compact Excavators at Utility Expo

Caterpillar is ramping up innovation in its compact excavator lineup with a fresh wave of updates announced at this year’s Utility Expo. Alongside the newly refreshed 303.5 mini excavator, the equipment giant revealed significant upgrades for its 5- to 10-metric-ton models, including smarter technology, enhanced safety, and new engines built for long-term reliability.

Upgrades for 308 CR, 309 CR, and 310 Models

The most notable updates target the 308 CR, 309 CR, and 310 models. All three now feature the new Cat C2.8 engine, which delivers identical power ratings and performance to the previous Cat 3.3B while introducing a maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) — both designed to last the machine’s lifetime without replacement.

In addition to engine improvements, rearview cameras now come standard across the three models. The 310 goes a step further with a side-view camera, available as an optional feature on the 308 CR and 309 CR, boosting visibility and on-site safety.

More Control, Less Effort

The next-generation 308 CR gets an optional angle blade that simplifies backfilling operations. Paired with Stick Steer and blade control on the right joystick, operators can switch seamlessly between excavator and dozer-style operation. The design includes a dozer float function for smoother grading and a three-piece bolt-on cutting edge that can be inverted to extend its lifespan.

For job sites demanding advanced attachments, Caterpillar now offers a third auxiliary hydraulic option across the three models, allowing operators to run high-power or multi-function tools with ease.

305 CR Embraces Smart Software

The 45-horsepower 305 CR is also stepping into the digital era with the addition of E-Fence and Indicate software options — factory-installed or available as upgrades.

  • E-Fence enables operators to create virtual boundaries, preventing the excavator from hitting nearby objects such as power lines, tree limbs, or underground utilities. It’s an ideal feature for crowded or hazard-prone jobsites.
  • Indicate provides real-time depth and slope feedback via in-cab monitors, allowing operators to dig precisely to their target grade without repeated manual checks.

For added versatility, these models can also be equipped with an optional Laser Catcher, enhancing accuracy across larger projects that require multiple repositionings.
