Blue Energy Motors Launches Electric Truck, India’s First E-Highway Opens

In a landmark moment for India’s transport sector, Blue Energy Motors (BEM) has launched an advanced electric heavy-duty truck featuring battery swapping technology at its Chakan facility in Pune. The event was graced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also inaugurated the nation’s first electric highway corridor between Mumbai and Pune.

The newly inaugurated corridor marks the first phase of a nationwide initiative to electrify major highway routes over the next three years, aligning with India’s Net Zero vision and its mission to build a sustainable freight ecosystem.

As part of its growth plan, BEM signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maharashtra government to establish a new manufacturing unit capable of producing up to 30,000 electric trucks annually, supported by a ₹3,500 crore investment. The company has already secured MoUs for over 10,000 electric trucks, signalling growing confidence in the adoption of electric freight solutions.

Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasized Maharashtra’s leadership in sustainable innovation, noting that the project represents a critical step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and a greener transportation future.

Anirudh Bhuwalka, Founder and Managing Director of Blue Energy Motors, hailed the event as the beginning of an electric revolution in India’s heavy-duty segment. “Our trucks are designed for Indian conditions, offering unlimited range through battery swapping, higher payload capacity, and advanced mobility intelligence,” he said.

The electric truck operates on an Energy-as-a-Service model, reducing upfront costs for customers while ensuring minimal downtime through fast battery swaps. This model is expected to deliver one of the lowest total costs of ownership in the industry, setting new benchmarks for performance and efficiency.

Anshuman Ruia, Director at Essar and strategic partner in the venture, described the initiative as a “milestone in India’s decarbonization journey,” reaffirming Essar’s commitment to promoting clean mobility and sustainable infrastructure.

Blue Energy Motors, known for its LNG-powered trucks, is now expanding into the electric mobility space with a strong focus on technology integration, energy services, and environmental responsibility—ushering in a new era of clean and intelligent freight transportation in India.
