BPCL and Reliance BP Mobility Partner to Boost India’s Gas-Based Economy

In a significant move toward promoting cleaner energy, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Reliance BP Mobility Limited (RBML) have announced a strategic collaboration in the city gas distribution (CGD) and compressed natural gas (CNG) sales segments. The partnership aims to strengthen India’s transition toward a gas-based economy, ensuring wider access to affordable and sustainable fuel alternatives across the nation.

RBML, an equal joint venture between Reliance Industries Limited and the UK’s BP Plc, operates in the mobility segment, offering advanced fuel and EV charging solutions. Through this collaboration, BPCL and RBML will leverage each other’s infrastructure, technological capabilities, and retail network to expand CNG accessibility and improve customer convenience in urban and semi-urban areas.

Rahul Tandon, Business Head for Gas at BPCL, emphasized the importance of this alliance in achieving India’s clean energy goals. “The end customer must receive our molecule, aligning with the broader vision of promoting a gas-based economy,” he said. “This partnership will enhance our progress towards this national objective.”

In a joint statement, both companies highlighted that their partnership supports the Government of India’s target to increase the share of natural gas in the country’s energy mix from the current 6% to 15% by 2030. This aligns with India’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and dependence on conventional fossil fuels while encouraging sustainable mobility.

Akshay Wadhwa, CEO of RBML, expressed optimism about the partnership’s impact. “RBML outlets attract higher footfall, which will drive increased CNG sales in the area, thereby contributing to the overall goals of India’s gas-based economy,” he noted. With BPCL’s extensive gas network and RBML’s customer-centric mobility ecosystem, the collaboration is expected to significantly boost CNG adoption among both private and commercial vehicle owners.

The move reflects a growing industry trend of strategic partnerships aimed at transforming India’s transportation sector through clean energy solutions. By combining their expertise, BPCL and RBML are not only supporting the nation’s environmental goals but also setting the stage for a more efficient and sustainable energy future.
