BillionE and Hindalco Launch India’s First Heavy-Duty Electric Freight Corridor in Gujarat

Indian e-mobility-as-a-service (eMaaS) provider BillionE has joined hands with Hindalco Industries, one of the country’s leading producers of aluminium and copper, to deploy ten heavy-duty electric trucks for industrial freight movement in Gujarat. The companies also plan to expand this fleet by adding five more electric trucks within the next three months, reinforcing their shared goal of driving sustainable logistics across India.

This collaboration has led to the creation of India’s first heavy-duty electric freight corridor, connecting Hindalco’s copper smelting plant in Dahej with its continuous cast rod unit in Asoj—a distance of around 160 kilometres. The corridor signifies a major step toward electrifying long-haul freight operations in one of India’s most industrially active states.

To ensure uninterrupted operations, BillionE is utilising the ChargeZone network, India’s largest EV charging infrastructure, founded by Kartikey Hariyani, who is also the founder of BillionE. The corridor is powered by ChargeZone’s high-capacity charging stations located at Karjan, Bharuch, and another strategic midpoint along the route. This integrated setup allows for efficient, zero-emission transport between industrial hubs without compromising on turnaround times.

Sanjeev Kulkarni, CEO of BillionE, expressed that the initiative represents more than a logistics upgrade—it is a movement towards a cleaner, scalable future for India’s freight industry. “The launch of this heavy-duty electric freight corridor is a transformative moment. It redefines how India can move goods efficiently and sustainably at scale,” he said.

Bishnu Agarwal, Functional Head of F&C Copper Business at Hindalco Industries, added that the partnership brings both environmental and operational benefits. “With these electric trucks, we are cutting down our carbon footprint while boosting productivity through vehicles that are quieter, require less maintenance, and are future-ready,” he stated.

The newly deployed 55-tonne electric trucks are believed to be based on Ashok Leyland’s Avtr 55T Electric platform. These vehicles come equipped with a 300 kWh battery pack, delivering power through a 220 kW electric motor and offering a range of up to 180 kilometres per charge. Designed for applications such as port operations, steel and cement transport, and bulk material handling, these trucks mark a significant advancement in India’s heavy-duty EV landscape.

BillionE had earlier placed an order for 180 electric trucks from Ashok Leyland, covering multiple models including the Avtr 55T Electric, BOSS 19T Electric, and BOSS 14T Electric. This deployment with Hindalco marks one of the first major operational rollouts under that order.

In the coming months, Hindalco plans to integrate more electric vehicles for secondary transport operations across Vapi, Daman, and Silvassa, expanding the electric freight ecosystem throughout western India.

The BillionE–Hindalco initiative underscores how industrial partnerships can drive large-scale adoption of clean transport technologies—paving the way for a greener, more efficient logistics network that aligns with India’s net-zero ambitions.
