Truck Overturns in Shahbad Dairy, One Dead and 14 Injured
A 20-year-old man was killed and at least 14 others were injured when a truck carrying around 40 people overturned in northwest Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy on Friday afternoon.
Police said the victims were returning from a Durga idol immersion in Khera when the accident took place near KVS School in Rohini’s Sector 28. Preliminary investigations suggest the driver was under the influence of alcohol and lost control while taking a sharp turn, causing the vehicle to topple.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer-North) Hareshwar Swami said that upon reaching the spot, officers found the truck overturned with multiple passengers trapped. “Around 12–15 people sustained injuries, two of them critically. The victims were immediately rushed to BSA Hospital with the help of local residents,” he said.
The deceased has been identified as Anmol Kumar, aged 20, who succumbed to his injuries later in the evening. The driver, who was also injured in the crash, is suspected to have been intoxicated and has been booked for rash and negligent driving. Police have registered a case and are recording statements of survivors to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
Eyewitnesses at the site alleged that the truck was overcrowded and moving at high speed. “The driver appeared drunk and was driving recklessly. When the truck turned sharply, it lost balance and flipped,” said one witness.
Authorities highlighted that the accident underscores the dangers of unsafe travel practices during festivals, where overloaded vehicles are often used to ferry large groups. Police said additional safety measures and awareness drives will be stepped up to prevent such incidents in the future.
