Volvo Trucks Launches All-New VNL Long-Haul Semi, Redefining Driver Comfort and Efficiency

Volvo Trucks North America has unveiled its latest long-haul Class 8 truck, the VNL, marking a major update to a platform that has been in use since 1996. The new VNL, which began production in October 2024, aims to deliver significant improvements in driver comfort, safety, and fuel efficiency, while addressing the critical issue of driver retention in the trucking industry.

High driver turnover—historically exceeding 80% annually—has been a persistent challenge, with fleets spending approximately $10,000 per driver on onboarding. To tackle this, Volvo conducted extensive R&D and thousands of driver interviews to identify the key factors for comfort. The new VNL features enhanced seat suspension with an optional massage function, improved climate control, a roomy interior, blackout curtains, and ample storage, all designed to make long-haul journeys less physically demanding.

The truck also introduces advanced visibility and safety systems. Side mirrors are complemented by vertical monitors with infrared technology, eliminating most blind spots. Volvo’s Active Driver Assist Plus system supports lane centering, lane-change alerts, and pedestrian detection, while the new VNL will soon integrate side curtain airbags for rollover protection.

Fuel efficiency has also been a major focus. Volvo claims the VNL saves customers at least 10% compared to the previous model, largely through aerodynamic improvements and a more efficient drivetrain. Advanced cruise control, integrated with Sygic Navigation GPS mapping, allows the truck to optimize speed on hills and stop-and-go traffic, helping fleets save fuel and reduce emissions. Volvo’s Load Finder platform further reduces empty miles by aggregating load information from multiple sources.

Designed to accommodate drivers from the 5th to 95th percentile in size, the VNL is automatic, quiet, and easy to operate, making long-haul driving comparable to a car in terms of ease and control. Early tests confirm the VNL offers exceptional comfort, visibility, and operational efficiency, setting a new benchmark for Class 8 trucks in North America.

With these enhancements, Volvo Trucks North America aims to improve fleet profitability, enhance driver retention, and increase safety, positioning the new VNL as a strong contender even in a challenging market for Class 8 trucks.
