Montra Electric Launches Rhino 5538 EV 4×2 TT and India’s First Automated Battery Plant
Montra Electric eM&HCV (IPLTech Electric Private Limited), the clean mobility arm of the Murugappa Group, has launched its latest 55-ton electric truck, the Rhino 5538 EV 4×2 TT, and introduced battery swapping technology for its Rhino range. The company also inaugurated India’s first all-women monitored automated battery plant at its Manesar facility, along with a new conveyor line using Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs).
Rhino 5538 EV 4×2 TT: Heavy-Duty Performance
The Rhino 5538 EV 4×2 TT is powered by a 282 kWh LFP battery, producing 380 HP and 2000 Nm torque, with a range of nearly 198 km under test conditions. It features a 6-speed AMT transmission, robust chassis, and multiple trailer compatibility, offering flexibility for long-haul freight. With a Gross Combination Weight (GCW) of 55 tons, it is purpose-built for Indian road conditions.
The truck is priced at ₹1.15 crore (ex-factory) for the fixed-battery model. Montra offers a 10-year/9 lakh km AMC contract with 95% uptime guarantee, advanced telematics, and financing support.
Battery Swap Technology: A Game-Changer
Montra also introduced battery swap stations for its Rhino 5538 EV 4×2 TT and 6×4 TT models. Swapping takes under 6 minutes, compared to over an hour with fast charging. Built on a 7+1 configuration, the system can handle 160+ swaps daily, supports controlled charging for longer battery life, and allows trucks with trailers to move seamlessly through drive-through lanes.
Automation and Sustainability Milestones
At the event, Montra inaugurated:
- India’s first women-monitored automated battery plant
- A new conveyor line integrated with AGVs for improved efficiency
These advancements strengthen localization and sustainability in India’s commercial EV sector.
