Telangana Prepares to Roll Out 2,000 Electric Buses by 2026
The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is gearing up for a major transformation by phasing out diesel buses and introducing a new fleet of electric vehicles. This shift, supported by the Prime Minister e-Drive scheme, brings 2,000 electric buses to the state, marking a huge step towards cleaner and greener public transport.
To make this vision a reality, the RTC is investing in robust infrastructure. Around Rs 292 crore has been sought for high-tension power connections, along with Rs 100 crore for the construction of 10 brand-new depots. In total, nearly Rs 392 crore has been requested from the State Government. The corporation has also asked for 100 acres of land to build these depots, with a dedicated committee now working to identify the most suitable locations.
Currently, Hyderabad’s fleet consists of about 2,800 diesel buses. In line with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s directive to operate only electric buses within the Outer Ring Road, the RTC is also exploring ways to procure an additional 800 buses, apart from those already sanctioned by the Centre.
The Centre has already floated tenders for the 2,000 buses, with financial bids expected to be finalised in September. Once production begins, the first batch of buses is anticipated to arrive in early 2026.
For smooth operations, the RTC is setting up charging infrastructure at 19 existing depots and 10 new depots across Hyderabad. To reduce downtime, 10 public charging stations will also be built across the city so buses can recharge without returning to depots. Each of these stations will require about 2,000 square meters of land, for which government assistance has been requested.
For commuters, this transition means more than just a change in buses. Electric buses promise quieter rides, less air pollution, and smoother journeys—helping make Hyderabad’s roads cleaner and the city’s air fresher. The move also ensures affordable, sustainable public transport, giving passengers a modern and eco-friendly way to travel while cutting down the city’s carbon footprint.
